In this issue, we return to an experiment we’ve tried before: having all the inside illustrations created by one artist for continuity and unity in style and flavor. Art editor Mary Ann Blue Gotera is our single illustrator this time.
We are proud to celebrate Black History Month—February in the US—with poems by Shanita Bigelow and Allison Joseph. Our Paeans and Synecdoche columns also review books by African American writers.
Some fiction in this issue plumbs Old World vs. New World themes: Daniel Karasik’s Old World–style apprenticeship story, John Smolens’s protagonist dealing with suicide by traveling to the Old World, and Vedran Husic’s exploration of the immigrant experience: how to honor Old World traditions.
